What is UL 325?
UL 325 is a safety standard published by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a not-for-profit safety science organization founded in 1894. The standard's full name is "Standard for Door, Drapery, Gate, Louver, and Window Operators and Systems," but for our purposes, we are focused on the gate operator provisions.
The standard establishes minimum safety requirements for automatic gate operators, including:
- Entrapment protection: devices that detect people or objects in the gate's path.
- Force limits: how much force a gate can exert before it must stop and reverse.
- Speed restrictions: maximum travel speed for gate operators.
- Device monitoring: requiring the operator to verify that safety devices are connected and functional.
- Warning signage: visible signs on both sides of every automatic gate.
The 7th edition of UL 325 (effective August 1, 2018) is the current governing standard as of 2026. All gate operators manufactured on or after that date must meet or exceed 7th edition requirements. A March 2024 standards update notice added provisions for bifold gates and updated injury warning language, effective March 2025.
Importantly, UL does not "approve" gate operators. Instead, manufacturers submit their products for testing, and if they pass, they receive a listing mark (UL, ETL, or MET label). The manufacturer, not the lab, bears full responsibility for ongoing compliance.

UL 325 compliance is not a one-time event. Over time, safety devices degrade, sensors drift out of alignment, photo eyes collect dirt, and wiring deteriorates. A gate that was compliant at installation can fall out of compliance without regular maintenance.

The 7th edition of UL 325 classifies gate operators into four classes based on property type and expected traffic. The class determines the number and type of safety devices required for full compliance.

Most Bay Area homeowners fall under Class I. If you live in a single-family home in Atherton, Los Altos Hills, Orinda, Danville, Saratoga, or similar residential areas, your gate system needs to meet Class I requirements at minimum. HOA-managed community gates with 5 or more units fall under Class II.
Entrapment zones and protection devices
At the core of UL 325 you will find entrapment protection, preventing people, animals, or objects from getting caught, pinned, or crushed by a moving gate. UL 325 requires at least two independent entrapment protection devices for each potential entrapment zone, in each direction of travel.

What is an entrapment zone?
An entrapment zone is any area where a person or object could become trapped between the moving gate and a fixed structure. Common entrapment zones include:
- Between the leading edge of a sliding gate and a post or wall
- Between a swinging gate and the ground, hinges, or adjacent structures
- Pinch points where gate components intersect during movement
- Between the gate and any nearby fixed object within the gate's travel path
Types of entrapment protection devices
UL 325 recognizes two main categories of protection.
1. Inherent entrapment protection (built into the operator). This system lives inside the gate operator itself, typically a force-sensing mechanism that detects resistance and reverses the gate. All UL 325-listed operators include this feature. However, it only counts as one of the required two devices.
2. External entrapment protection devices.
- Photo eyes (photoelectric sensors): create an invisible beam across the gate's path. When broken, the gate stops and reverses. These are the most common external device.
- Contact edge sensors (safety edges): pressure-sensitive strips mounted on the leading edge of the gate. When something touches the edge, the gate reverses immediately.
- Non-contact sensors: devices like loop detectors embedded in the ground that sense the presence of vehicles or large metal objects in the gate's path.
The two required entrapment protection devices must be different types. You cannot use two photo eyes to meet the requirement. You need a photo eye plus a contact edge sensor (or another different device type). The gate operator must also monitor all external safety devices. If a device is disconnected, malfunctioning, or not connected at all, the operator must refuse to run.
ASTM F2200: the gate construction standard
While UL 325 governs the operator (the motor and control system), a companion standard governs the gate itself, ASTM F2200. Together, these two standards ensure complete compliance across every angle of your gate system.
ASTM F2200 sets requirements for:
- Picket spacing: vertical bars must sit close enough together that a 4-inch sphere cannot pass through. This prevents children from getting their heads stuck between openings.
- Gate weight and balance: the gate must balance properly for its operator. An overweight or unbalanced gate creates excessive force.
- Material strength: construction materials must withstand repeated use without failing or creating new hazards.
- No horizontal climbing bars: gate design should discourage climbing, especially by children.

Missing or disconnected photo eyes
This ranks as the number one issue. Photo eyes frequently get bumped, weathered, or intentionally disconnected by homeowners frustrated with false triggers. Older systems installed before the 7th edition may never have had proper photo eyes at all.
Only one type of safety device
Many gates have photo eyes but no edge sensor, or vice versa. UL 325 requires two different types of devices. A single type, no matter how many you install, does not meet the standard.
Bypassed safety monitoring
Some older operators or improperly installed systems have their safety device monitoring bypassed, meaning the gate runs whether the safety devices are working or not. The 7th edition specifically prohibits tampering with or bypassing monitoring features.
Missing warning signs
UL 325 requires visible warning signs on both sides of every automatic gate. These signs alert pedestrians and drivers that the gate operates automatically. Many gates we inspect have no signage at all.
Non-UL-listed operators
Occasionally we find gate operators that lack a listing mark from any nationally recognized testing laboratory. This happens most often with DIY installations or operators purchased online from overseas manufacturers. If the operator does not display a UL, ETL, or MET label, it has not been tested to UL 325 standards.

UL 325 compliance checklist for your gate
Use this checklist to do a basic self-assessment of your gate system. While it does not replace a professional inspection, it can help you identify obvious issues.
- ✓Gate operator has a UL, ETL, or MET listing label. Check the operator unit for a certification mark from a nationally recognized testing laboratory.
- ✓Photo eyes are installed and aligned. The invisible beam should span across the gate's path at each entrapment zone. Test by waving your hand through the beam while the gate is closing; it should stop and reverse immediately.
- ✓Edge sensors are installed on the leading edge. Press the safety edge while the gate is closing. The gate should stop and reverse on contact.
- ✓Warning signs are posted on both sides. Signs should remain clearly visible and legible, warning that the gate operates automatically.
- ✓Gate reverses when it contacts an obstruction. Place a rigid 2x4 flat on the ground in the gate's path. The gate should reverse within 2 seconds of contact.
- ✓Controls are at least 6 feet from the gate. Keypads, push buttons, and other controls should sit far enough away that a person operating them cannot reach the moving gate.
- ✓Pedestrian access is separate from the vehicular gate. A separate walkway or pedestrian gate should exist so people do not need to walk through the vehicle gate opening.
- ✓Gate construction meets spacing requirements. A 4-inch sphere should not pass through any opening in the gate.
Test your safety devices at least once a month. Photo eyes can drift out of alignment from wind, landscaping, or even a stray basketball. Edge sensors can crack in extreme heat. A 60-second monthly test can prevent a serious incident.
