Automatic gate repair is the diagnosis and repair of the powered parts of a gate, the operator or motor, the control board, the safety sensors, and the access controls, along with the mechanical parts like hinges, posts, rollers, track, and welds that let the gate move. The goal is a gate that opens, closes, and reverses safely on its own.

Los Altos Hills is a town of large lots, long private driveways, and shared entry lanes, so a dead gate can strand a car a long way from the road and block an emergency vehicle. We repair every part of an estate gate here: gate openers, control boards, safety sensors, battery backups, and the metalwork itself, and we cover the wider Santa Clara County area. If a gate is past saving, we also handle automatic gate installation in Los Altos Hills.

A repaired gate has to be a safe gate. Every automatic gate operator must meet the UL 325 safety standard for opening, reversing, and entrapment protection, which is why the photo-eye sensors and auto-reverse are not optional extras. On every repair we cycle the gate, tune the force and limits, and confirm the safety sensors work before we leave.
Repairs rarely need a Town permit, replacements do. Los Altos Hills Municipal Code Section 10-1.507 requires a Zoning or Site Development Permit to erect or replace any fence, wall, gate, or column, but subsection (g) exempts repair of short sections, under 50 feet or no more than 25 percent of the total length, with no other work on that structure in 12 months. Replace the gate and the setback rules apply: an open driveway gate must sit at least 30 feet from the road centerline and is capped at four and one half feet average height there, six feet average needs a 45 foot setback, and solid gates are limited to three feet at 30 feet.
Emergency access is part of the repair. Santa Clara County Fire Department Standard G-1 requires security gates with electronic controls to have an approved fire department override key switch, to operate during power outages, to stay open once that switch is used until crews reset them, and to be kept in an operative condition at all times. Town code Section 10-2.1102(g) also sets driveway width at 12 feet minimum and 14 feet maximum, to Fire Department standards.

    Common Problems

Gate problems we fix in Los Altos Hills

These are the failures we see most often on hillside estates and long driveways.

Gate will not open or close

A tripped safety sensor, a failed board, a worn motor, or power lost on a long driveway run. We find the real cause and get you moving again.

    Settled posts and dragging leaves

Hillside soil moves. Posts lean, a swing leaf drops and scrapes, a slide gate binds. We reset, realign, and reweld so it closes level again.

Dead battery backup or no power

Outages are common up here. If the backup battery, charger, or solar panel has quit, the gate stops when the power does. We repair or replace it.

Sensors, remotes, and the entry keypad

Oak leaves, dust, and landscape crews knock photo-eyes out of line. Remotes stop, keypads die, intercoms go quiet. We realign, reprogram, or replace.

Los Altos Hills gate repair FAQ

Do you offer same-day gate repair in Los Altos Hills?
Yes. We cover all of Los Altos Hills, from Fremont Road and Concepcion Road to Altamont Road, Moody Road, Page Mill Road, and Purissima Road. If a gate is stuck open, stuck closed, or blocking a long private driveway, we can often reach you the same day.
What gate brands do you repair?
We repair all major automatic gate brands, including LiftMaster, DoorKing, FAAC, Ramset, Elite, Viking, All-O-Matic, and US Automatic. We carry common operators, control boards, and parts on the truck, so most repairs are finished on the first visit.
My gate will not open, what could be wrong?
Up here it is usually a dead battery or a power drop over a long driveway run, a photo-eye knocked out of alignment by oak debris or a landscape crew, a worn operator, a failed control board, or a mechanical fault like a settled post or a seized roller. We diagnose the real cause on site rather than swapping parts and guessing.
Do I need a permit to repair a gate in Los Altos Hills?
Usually not. Los Altos Hills Municipal Code Section 10-1.507 requires a Zoning or Site Development Permit to erect or replace a gate, but subsection (g) exempts repair of short sections, under 50 feet or no more than 25 percent of the total length, with no other work on that structure in 12 months. A full replacement is different, and the setback and height limits then apply. Confirm current requirements with the Town Planning Department.
Does my automatic gate need a fire department override for emergency access?
Yes, and we test it on every visit. Santa Clara County Fire Department Standard G-1 requires security gates with electronic controls to have an approved fire department override key switch, to operate during power outages, and to be kept in an operative condition at all times. If your override switch, battery backup, or manual release has failed, we repair it.
Do you repair both sliding and swing gates?
Yes. We repair swing gates, including hinges, welds, posts, and swing operators, and sliding gates, including rollers, V-track, cantilever hardware, and slide operators, on estate gates and shared private-lane entries across Los Altos Hills.
How much does gate repair cost in Los Altos Hills?
It depends on the part that failed and the type of gate. A sensor alignment or remote reprogram is a small job, while a new operator or control board costs more. You get a written quote before any work begins, and the estimate is free.
