We designed, built, and automated a custom dual-swing driveway gate for a Danville home: a symmetrical arched profile in powder-coated black steel, engineered to open outward on a sloped driveway, automated with two LiftMaster LA500 operators, and finished with a wireless keypad and a Knox Box for emergency access.

The project, and the challenge that shaped it
Automatic Gate Masters designed, built, and installed this custom powder-coated dual-swing driveway gate for a residential property in Danville, CA. The finished entrance combines a symmetrical arched steel gate in an open picket design, a powder-coated black finish, an outward swing engineered for the sloped driveway, two LiftMaster LA500 operators, a wireless keypad, and a Knox Box for emergency access.
The challenge was the grade. The driveway rises away from the street directly behind the gate line, and a swing gate needs clearance through its full arc, not just at the closed position. A leaf that swings toward rising pavement drags or binds partway through the travel, so the slope had to be measured and designed for before anything was fabricated.
The solution: an outward-opening swing
The leaves were configured to open outward, away from the rising driveway, which keeps the bottom rails clear through the entire swing instead of running them into the slope. It is a small-sounding decision that determines whether the gate works smoothly for years or binds and wears within months.
Once the swing direction was set, the rest followed from it. Hinge locations, operator geometry, and the opening limits were all planned around the grade before fabrication started.
The takeaway for homeowners: a sloped driveway does not rule out a swing gate. It just means the slope has to be designed for at the start, not discovered during installation.

The gate was designed as a two leaf swing gate with a symmetrical arched profile. The top rails rise toward the center so the entrance has a softer architectural line rather than a flat horizontal edge, and both leaves mirror each other so the closed gate reads as one balanced composition.
Each leaf carries vertical steel pickets with circular decorative accents worked into the design, plus short solid steel kick panels along the bottom. This is an open picket gate: views of the home and landscaping stay open at eye level, and the low kick panels simply finish and protect the bottom edge of each leaf while giving the design a solid visual base.
The gate, the posts, and the hardware were all finished in powder-coated black: a finish applied as a dry powder and cured, which bonds to the steel more evenly than field-applied paint and holds up better to sun, rain, and daily cycling. Against the green exterior and white trim of the house, the consistent black reads as an intentional architectural element.

Automation and access equipment
Two LA500 operators, a wireless keypad, and a Knox Box for responders.
The gate is automated with two LiftMaster LA500 swing gate operators, one on each leaf. Both LiftMaster LA500 operators were programmed for coordinated operation, with the travel limits and timing adjusted so the two leaves meet properly at the center.
Day to day access runs through a LiftMaster KPW5 wireless keypad, which gives the household coded entry at the gate without a remote in hand or control wiring run to the keypad location. We also mounted a Knox Box on the left gate post: a secured key box that gives fire and emergency responders a controlled way in when nobody is home. Requirements vary by local fire agency, so we confirm what the authority having jurisdiction expects before installing one.

Set, wired, cycled, and tuned before we called it done.
Installation covered setting the posts, hanging both leaves, mounting and wiring the two operators, and installing the keypad and the Knox Box. Hinge alignment, arm travel, opening limits, and closing timing were then tuned with the gate in place, because that is the only way to confirm the leaves clear the slope through the entire arc and still meet cleanly at the center.
The finished entrance gives the property a defined, secure, automatic access point that suits the house: decorative rather than industrial, consistent in color across every component, working with the driveway instead of against it, with coded entry and emergency access both handled at the gate.
