The project

Automatic Gate Masters completed this custom dual swing automatic driveway gate for a residential property in Campbell, CA. The entrance needed a gate that would give dependable daily access while fitting cleanly between the home and the existing wood perimeter fence. The result: a custom black steel gate with vertical pickets and a square-grid upper detail, coordinated dual swing automation on two LiftMaster LA500 operators, and matching side panels that carry the design across the whole opening.

The two leaves meet at the center when closed and each runs on its own operator. We fabricated the gate to the actual opening and worked the posts, arms, and side panels around the buildings, the fence, and the paver driveway that were already there.

The custom steel gate design

A traditional foundation with one detail that lifts it above a standard picket gate.

The gate is built around three elements: a heavy rectangular outer frame, evenly spaced vertical steel pickets, and a square-grid detail across the upper section. The pickets give the gate a clean, traditional base, and the grid along the top adds character without tipping into ornate.

That combination reads as modern residential while still sitting naturally next to the surrounding homes and fencing. The black finish contrasts hard against the light paver driveway and the warm wood fence beside the entrance, and it visually ties the gate, posts, operators, and control box together as one system.

Finish

A deliberate contrast against light pavers and wood, giving the entrance its own identity.

The matching side panels that make it one entrance

The detail that separates a designed entrance from a gate dropped between two posts is what happens at the edges. This driveway had an opening on each side of the gate: one between the gate and the exterior wall of the home, one between the gate and the existing wood fence.

We fabricated narrow matching steel side panels for both. They use the same frame proportions, the same vertical pickets, and the same square grid as the two main leaves. On the left, the panel bridges the gate and the house. On the right, it connects the gate to the wood fence.

Carrying one pattern across every section is what keeps the entrance from looking pieced together from unrelated parts. Close the gate and your eye reads a single continuous design from the house all the way to the fence.

The takeaway for homeowners: the gate is the easy part. Whether the whole entrance looks intentional comes down to the transitions on either side of it.

Two LiftMaster LA500 operators

Two leaves, two operators, programmed to move as one.

The gate is automated with two LiftMaster LA500 swing gate operators, one on each leaf, so both sides open and close together. The operators were mounted on the interior side of the entrance, where they stay accessible for service while staying out of the exterior view.

Each operator connects the leaf to its supporting post through an articulated arm. The mounting position and arm geometry matter because they directly set the gate's range of movement and how it runs day to day, so we positioned them around the gate dimensions, the hinge locations, and the space beside the driveway.

A dual swing on two operators splits the width and the weight instead of relying on one oversized leaf. Each side gets independent mechanical support and its own controlled movement, and the two are programmed to open and close in a coordinated sequence. We paired the same operator on a horizontal slat dual swing gate in Burlingame and an Ipe wood gate in Emerald Hills.

Working around the property

Every gate has to fit the site that is already there.

This Campbell entrance came with real constraints: a light stone-paver driveway, limited space between two structures, the exterior wall of the home on one side, existing wood fencing on the other, overhead utility lines, and a wide opening that needed two automatic swing paths. The posts and leaves had to be positioned so the system could run without catching the buildings, the fence, or the surrounding surfaces.

The paver driveway also set the height and clearance. The bottom rails had to stay visually level while the leaves cleared the finished surface freely, so the gate looks straight across the opening and still swings without dragging.

The wiring. The LiftMaster control enclosure was mounted on the interior side near the left gate post. The control box, operator wiring, and conduit were arranged along defined routes between the controls and the two operators, rather than being left loose or unsupported. That keeps the finished entrance clean and, more importantly, keeps the system easy to inspect, maintain, and troubleshoot down the line.

The finished result

Custom fabrication, coordinated automation, and an entrance that reads as one piece.

The completed entrance is clean and coordinated. The custom steel gives it a strong visual base, the square upper grid adds character without overwhelming the property, the two LA500 operators handle convenient automatic access, and the matching side panels connect the new gate to everything already on site.

Campbell gate project FAQ

What is the gate in this Campbell project made of?
Welded steel with a black finish. The design is built around a heavy rectangular outer frame, evenly spaced vertical pickets, and a square-grid detail across the upper section, so the gate has structure and character without being overly decorative.
What are the matching side panels for?
They close the openings beside the gate posts, one between the gate and the home on the left, one between the gate and the existing wood fence on the right. They use the same frame proportions, vertical pickets, and square grid as the main leaves, so the whole entrance reads as one designed system instead of parts pieced together.
Which operators automate this gate?
Two LiftMaster LA500 swing gate operators, one on each leaf. The LA500 uses an articulated arm to move the leaf through its cycle, and the mounting position and arm geometry were set around the gate dimensions, the hinge locations, and the space beside the driveway.
Why does a dual swing gate need two operators?
Each leaf is its own moving section with its own weight, hinge, and arc, so each gets its own operator. The two are then programmed to work together, opening and closing in a coordinated sequence so the leaves meet cleanly at the center.
Why choose a dual swing layout for this driveway?
A dual swing splits the width and the weight across two leaves instead of relying on one oversized leaf. Each side has its own hinges, operator, and controlled movement, which suited the wide opening between the home and the side fence on this property.
Can you build a custom steel gate to match my property in Campbell?
Yes. We design and fabricate custom steel driveway gates in house, then automate them with the right operators. We build to the actual opening, work around existing structures and fencing, and match side panels and hardware so the finished entrance looks intentional.
