Orinda requires open material near the street, and open iron is our specialty. Under Orinda Municipal Code Section 17.4.27, a fence or gate within 5 feet of a property line fronting a street is limited to 4 feet and must be built completely of open material such as wrought iron, and no fence anywhere on the lot may exceed 6 feet. That makes an open steel or wrought iron gate the natural, code-friendly entrance for an Orinda drive, and gates can also be set further back from the street where taller solid designs are allowed. Sight lines at driveways and design review can add requirements on some lots.Because an automatic gate adds an operator and wiring, the electrical work typically needs its own permit.
