Gilroy allows a full-height driveway gate once it sits 26 feet back from the curb. Under Gilroy City Code Chapter 30, Article XXXIV (Section 30.34.30), residential fences may reach 7 feet, but anything in the front yard taller than 3 feet above the curb must be set back at least 26 feet from the face of curb. On corner lots, street-side yards need 16 feet from the face of curb above 3 feet. Besides that, a fence meeting the main-building setbacks may reach 8 feet when it stands 6 or more feet off the side lot line, while entry arbors and trellises over a gate are limited to 8 feet in the front setback. For sight lines, Section 20.60 keeps anything over 3 feet above curb out of the 20-foot corner triangle at intersections, and electrified fences are prohibited. In practice, we place the gate line 26 or more feet back so the gate can run full height, which also creates a guest parking apron in front of the gate. Gate operator electrical work is permitted through the City of Gilroy Building Division. Rules change and every lot is different, so we confirm the current requirements with the city and pull the permits the gate and automation need.
